$5million prize money to attract top drivers

Formula E will offer a prize of $5million for topping its driver’s championship, promoter Alejandro Agag told David Cushnan, editor in chief at SportsPro magazine. It is hoped that the purse will be sufficient to attract “top drivers”. Agag knows something about the calibre of a racing driver: his GP2 team Addax signed Sergio Perez, Charles Pic, Jules Bianchi, Romain Grosjean and Giedo van der Garde, all of whom now race in F1.

In an interview at the SportTel media event, where Formula E was presented to international broadcasters, Agag went on to reveal that:

  • Eight out of 10 teams are now signed up, and the complete line-up will be revealed in January 2015
  • Although two mandatory car changes form part of the first season’s rules, teams may use the stops like tyre stops in Formula 1, perhaps changing cars early to get their driver into clear air
  • Formula E will embark on a “world tour” in Spring 2015 to generate interest
  • The sport has instituted a “driver programme” with racing drivers already signed up. Teams will then pick their drivers from that pool
  • The voting system that will give popular drivers an additional Push to Pass power boost will make use of Twitter to register votes
